Audio–visual sync and timing measurement for HbbTV
Measure exactly when picture and sound reach the viewer during broadcast ad switches on European TVs.
- level timing resolution
- ms
- harness throughput
- 4×
- European broadcast features
- HbbTV
Context
HbbTV lets European broadcasters swap in targeted adverts on the TV. The switch has to happen at exactly the right moment, with picture and sound staying in sync.
Checking that means measuring what the viewer actually sees and hears, not what the software reports.
What I built
- Phototransistor-based optical sensing and analog audio capture with microcontrollers, measuring display timing at millisecond resolution.
- Measurement protocols for switch-time characterisation in targeted-advertisement scenarios, using QR-based visual markers and audio-decoder events aligned with the HbbTV specifications.
- A measurement harness scaled with parallel processing and task queues.
Outcome
- End-to-end validation of AV sync and timing behaviour for HbbTV-enabled TV features.
- 4× throughput from the scaled measurement harness.
